Tegu temperatures
Young tegus less than 20 inches in length will only need a surface basking area of 115 to 120 degrees, while adults tegus will prefer a hotter surface temperature of 125-135 degrees. Basking temperatures are measured at the surface on their basking platforms with an Infrared temp gun NOT a thermometer device.
When Tegus are smaller "hatchling size" a single UVB bulb is ok, but a cluster lighting is the best way to get a proper basking temps, as well as for the adults.. Currently a new method has come about, instead of measuring ambient temperatures, we are now measuring the surface basking area to get proper temperatures.
A series of lights include flood lights " par 38 bulbs" at lower wattage and one higher wattage UV bulb "Megaray" provides a larger and more effective basking area than one higher wattage UV bulb. ( wattage of UV will depend on the size of enclosure you have as well)
Now the temperatures of the coolest side of the enclosure should be in the 70-80's and warm side high 80's (This is ok to measure with a thermometer )
Humidity:
The necessary humidity levels should be at 75 to 90 percent to promote shedding and maintain proper health. All substrate should be lightly misted daily to aid in this process. Remember, just mist, do not soak!
